When I was researching my Bridger ancestors in Smithfield Virginia, I kept finding Powell names in the records there and I just had an inkling that they might be from my husband Dave’s Powell family. So I had Dave’s DNA tested and lo and behold he indeed is descended from Thomas Powell (1616-1687) of Isle of Wight County, Virginia. It seems that Thomas and my ancestor Joseph Bridger were contemporaries!

My quest now is to find the connection between the known Powell ancestor and Thomas Powell of Isle of Wight.

Here is what I currently know:

In “A Sketch of the History of the parents and brothers and sisters of Sarah Wood, wife of Amon Wood, from their daughter, Mrs. Sarah LaForce” it says that Phoebe Wood married Benjamin B. Powell and their children were: John Powell and Sarah Ann Powell (ONLY!)

From “History of Greene County, Illinois” published in 1879: Woodville, Oct. 10, 1835 was platted by Amon WOOD, Seanright WOOD and others. Benjamin Bridges POWELL built the 4th Primitive establishment–a log cabin. From “History of Greene & Jersey Counties Illinois – 1885, pg. 1017: Benjamin Bridges Powell settled the fall of 1830, was a Tennessee “native.” His parents came to Tennessee in 1805 or 1806 – married a Miss Lancaster, wife died in 1831, married then Phoebe Wood – he died Dec. 9, 1874. His first wife [Nancy LANCASTER] was among the first to be interned in the Carrollton cemetery.

Springfield, Ill.: Continental Historical Co.

BENJAMIN B. POWELL made a settlement in Carrollton Township in the fall of 1830. He was a native of Tennessee, born July 24, 1801. His parents came to Illinois as early as 1805 or 6, where they died, and Benjamin went back to Tennessee, and later to Alabama, where he married a Miss Lancaster. He removed to Illinois as above stated. His wife died in 1831, and was among the first to be interred in the Carrollton cemetery. He again married Phoebe Wood. He died a resident of the county, in Woodville Township, Dec. 9, 1874.

History of WOODVILLE:

“The fourth building, upon the town site, was a log dwelling, put up by Benjamin Powell, for a dwelling the same year. Allen Wood dispensed drugs, although the hamlet never had an exclusively drug store. There has been but little growth to the village since that date. In 1870, Dr. Bruner located as a physician at this point, and built a fine residence. “

A look at the Illinois Land Sales on the Internet shows that Benjamin B. Powell purchased 40 acres of government land in Greene County on 12/7/1836. The location of this land was – Twp 09N, Section 2 NWSE, Range 13W.

On the 1830 census of Greene County, Ill., there was 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10 and 1 male 20-30 (Benjamin) plus 1 female under 5 and 1 female 20-30 (Phoebe)

On the 1840 census, there was one male under 5, one male 10-15, one male 15-20, one male 30-40 (Benjamin,) plus one female 10-15 and one female 30-40 (Phoebe.) This indicates that the female child who appears on the 1830 census might have died before 1840.

On 11/23/1998 I received a package from Jack Cox, a WOOD descendant. In it were about 100 pages of copies of his great-great grandfather’s original typewritten genealogy, compiled in about 1900-1910. The genealogy states “The following pages contain a record of four families and their descendants, very complete or part of them but not so much so of others. They are arranged in the following order and date from approximately these dates (allowing for marriageable age). The families are: TRIMBLE – 1770, RICE – 1783, BROWNING – 1770, WOOD – 1749. The data contained herein has been collected by: Mrs. Mary Agnes White – of Carrollton, Greene County, Illinois, John Perry Browning – of Chicago, Illinois, 6337 Stewart Ave., and Thomas Orville Browning of Chicago, Illinois, 6337 Stewart Ave., and taken from: Records in family bibles, framed family records, monuments, other records sent by the different parties, conversations with people who were acquainted with the parties and in many cases from the parties themselves, and arranged by: Thomas Orville Browning of Chicago, Illinois, 6337 Stewart Ave. One page is given to ‘EACH INDIVIDUAL FAMILY’ of which there is a record.” There is also a written notation on the page that states “Grandpa Browning’s family.” ………..

“They had 2 children, 1 son and 1 daughter: John Powell married Margaret Tillery; Sarah Ann Powell married Hirum Gadey.” (I have that Sarah married Robert Hensen.)

POWELL /LANCASTERCONNECTION

On 1/29/1999 I rec’d an email from Joe, [email protected] that said: “I am trying to find info on the POWELL families that show on the 1830 Greene Co., IL census. My g.g.g.g. grandmother was Mary POWELL. She was married to Robert LANCASTER and they lived in Greene Co., IL at time of 1830 Census. Robert LANCASTER had lived in Smith Co., TN early 1800’s and we believe the family lived in Surry Co., NC for a brief period after leaving VA in 1780’s(?)” This seems to be the only possible connection I have ever had to anyone regarding our Benjamin Bridges Powell. “

My reply in part was: “Your information on Robert Lancaster is very interesting. My husband’s great-great grandfather, Benjamin Bridges Powell was married to a Miss Lancaster before he married my husband’s great-great grandmother, Phoebe Wood. Sounds like there might be a connection here.

I never really thought this out before, but since the 1830 census shows Benjamin Bridges living in a household with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10 and 1 female under 5, plus himself and wife, THOSE CHILDREN MUST HAVE BEEN THE CHILDREN OF HIM AND MISS LANCASTER because he did not marry Phoebe Wood until 1835, AFTER Miss Lancaster died in 1831! And they lived next door to YOUR Robert A. Lancaster!!

It seems that your Mary Ann might have been the sister of our Benjamin.

I have tried over the years to find out any info on Benjamin or his parents or siblings, without any luck. I posted info to the Powell mailing list, but received no replies. Your mention that Robert Lancaster lived in Smith Co., Tenn. in the early 1800s might give me a clue to check out Benjamin’s origins there. I only know that he was born in Tenn. in 1801. I think I will post a query on the Smith County genealogy web site. “

Benjamin and family are in Greene County in 1870, with Martha and Frank Dugan living next door (Martha Powell m. Francis M Dugan in 1868 in Greene County)…it would appear that James and family moved back to Greene County during the war 1862-1869.

Haven’t gotten much farther, but did find Martha and Frank Dugan in the 1920 Census in Cherokee Co. KS (just across state line from Newton Co. MO) they are in their 70’s… Martha says she was born in MO, her father in AL, her mother in TN.

Also, a Temperence Powell m. W H Davis in Greene County in 1874…

Benjamin’s occupation is listed as Shoe and bootmaker in the 1850 census, and as a farmer in 1850.

I received this email from another researcher:

Hello,

I saw your post on the Smith County, TN, genealogy website.

I believe I am descended from Mary Ann Powell and Robert Alexander Lancaster through their son, Sterling Lancaster. I found them in Izard County, Arkansas.

Do you have any records with Sterling Lancaster listed as one of the children of Mary Ann and Robert Lancaster? I believe his first name might have been Allen Sterling Lancaster. He was born 1820-1822. He ended up in California with his wife and famiy.

I sure hope your email address hasn’t changed since you posted your message.

I’d be glad to share any Lancaster information that would be of use to you.

Hello,

Yes, My Powell-Lancasters went from Smith County, TN, to Greene County, Illinois, and some of them went to Izard County, Arkansas and ended up in Newton County, Missouri.

As far as I can tell, there were two Robert Lancasters in a closely related family situation.  One was the older Robert Alexander Lancaster, Sr.  The other was Robert Allen Lancaster, Jr.  There were just a few years’ difference in age.  One was the son of John Lancaster, the other was the grandson of John Lancaster, the illegitimate son of Mary “Polly” Lancaster.

So, the belief is that those two Lancaster men married TWO Powell sisters, one of those sisters was Mary Ann Powell, the other is only recorded as “Miss” Powell, who married the younger Robert Allen Lancaster, Jr.  Dempsey Powell was their father and the two daughters are listed among his heirs in a Tennessee document.  My source for this information is Nancy Matthews, a co-genealogist who has done a whole lot of work on these families.

I have also heard somewhere (perhaps it was a posting you made) that some of the other Powells and Lancasters from this same family married each other.

I know for sure that Robert Alexander Lancaster, Jr. and Mary Ann Powell Lancaster settled in Izard County, Arkansas, near the beautiful town of Mountain View.

All my research finds that my great grandfather, Sterling Lancaster, was the son of Robert Alexander and Mary Ann Powell Lancaster.  My own family records along with census records come together to make my belief in the family connection very firm.

Sterling Lancaster and some of his brothers, along with Sterling’s wife, Amelia Tate Lancaster, and some of her Tate brothers, were all living in Newton County, Missouri, for the 1850 census.  Shortly after that, Sterling and Amelia headed west to partake in the California Gold Rush.  Amelia’s brother and family, Mitchell Tate, remained in Missouri.

In 1844, there are tax records in Izard County, Arkansas, for Sterling Lancaster.  He and Amelia were married there in 1848.  Amelia’s mother, Lydia (Eagle) Tate, was living in Newton County, Missouri, in 1840, and her father was not mentioned.  I believe he died before that date.  Amelia’s

Brother, Mitchell Tate, named two of his younger children after their parents, Lydia and George Tate.

I believe that these families migrated together from Tennessee to Illinois and Arkansas and perhaps Missouri.

You are probably descended from Benjamin Powell is my instinct is correct.

Maybe this will provide a missing piece in the ol’ family puzzle.

Sterling and Amelia Lancaster had more children in California, and that is where they lived out their lives.  Their youngest daughter, Katherine Lancaster, was my great grandmother.

I look forward to hearing from you again,

Jan Gentry, g-g-g-granddaughter of Mary Ann Powell Lancaster

Hi Jan, ([email protected])

I have several questions. I’m excited because I’m sure we’ve found a connection. I’m sorry that I have no information on your Sterling Lancaster. However, I think we do have a connection between you and our Miss Lancaster, wife of Benjamin Bridges Powell, my husband’s 2nd great grandfather. The 1830 census of Greene Co., Illinois shows Benjamin Bridges living in a household with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10 and 1 female under 5, plus himself and wife (unknown first name – maiden name Lancaster). We found out about Miss Lancaster from a Greene County History. Anyway, those children living with Benjamin and wife are the 3 children he had with wife ? (Lancaster) Powell, because he did not marry Phoebe Wood until 1835, AFTER Miss Lancaster died in 1831. In the 1830 Greene County, Illinois census, they lived next door to Robert A. Lancaster, who had 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 2 males 15-20, 2 males 20-30, and 1 male 40-50 and only 1 female 50-60 years old. There are other Lancasters in the 1830 census of Greene County – John M., and Robert (not Robert A.) and Jesse who lived 4 houses from each other. And a son of Benjamin Powell, also named Benjamin, lived between them.

In the 1840 census of Greene County, there is only one Lancaster – Robert, who has the following living in his household – 1 male 10-15, 2 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, and one female 60-70.

We know that our Benjamin and his 2nd wife Phoebe (Wood) were in Newton County by the 1850 census. We don’t know why they went from Greene County, Illinois all the way across and down the state of Missouri to Newton County, Missouri. I’m sure you know Newton is in the far SW county of Missouri, bordering the Oklahoma & Kansas state borders. He also has a James A. Powell living next door with a wife with the first name of Mary. I assume that this James might be the son of Benjamin and Miss Lancaster because he’s only 20 years old which means he was born in 1830, which is before his wife (Lancaster) died.

  • I am a decendent of Thomas Powell. I have some record. Thomas Powell came over on the Ship the Sea Venture on November 1610. He was the ship Cook. approximately 150 passengers.

  • Vicki Powell

James A. Powell was the son of Benjamin and Miss Lancaster. You find them in Missouri for a while and then back in Illinois by 1863, and running back and forth from Missouri to Illinois for the next 10 years. Many of his younger children end up in Oklahoma. After James’ wife Mary dies about 1876, I suppose James is forced to get help from his daughter Martha to raise his younger children and she seems to continue this after his death after 1880. 1880 Illinois census shows several siblings living with Martha and Frank Dugan.

  • Eddie,

Sorry I have not replied earlier, but I can’t seem to find an earlier inquiry from you. The comment section on my Word Press website is quite confusing. Are you referring to Thomas Powell of 17th centure Isle of Wight, Virginia? I do not yet have any information on that Thomas Powell. I only know what I’ve reported on the website. I did copy hundreds of pages from a book on the Powell family, but I have not as yet had a chance to read or interpret those pages. I need to trace our known Benjamin Bridges Powell backwards and try to connect with Thomas Powell. That is a period of over 100 years, so it will be difficult. I will post all my research on this website as I gather information. If you have another question, you may email me direct at [email protected]

    Thanks, Elaine Powell

I descend from Sarah Powell born VA).
Se was married to Henry Trent born in Manchester Parish, VA 1719.
I am interested in finding her parent’s names. I descend from her daughter Priscille Trent m. 11-12-1782 Campbell Co., VA to Josiah Daniel, Sr. Pricilla ( gravemarker) b. 1765 Josiah b. 1756 both in Va according to their son, Josiah, Jr.

  • Beth Lancaster

Apparently I am related to Robert Lancaster and Mary Ann Powell. I have her mother as Mourning Powell. Alot of the info is still sketchy to say the least. I’m still trying to work thru the details, so any info would be extremely helpful

  • Hi Cindy,
I’m sorry I have no information on your Powell family. If you can give me a little more info, perhaps I can do some searching on Ancestry.com for you. Are your sure your great grandmother’s name was Barbara? I found a Beatrice Powell married to a Walter B. Powell who lived in Arkansas. Do you have their birth dates? Also, if you can give me your grandparents names then I could more easily find their parents in census records. You might also contact the cemetery to see if they have more information on them.
You can email me direct at [email protected].
    Regards,
    Elaine Powell

  • Thanks for your kind comments.

I use Word Press. There is a choice of templates. It is free. Go to http://www.wordpress.com Go to http://en.wordpress.com/features/ to sign up.

WordPress.com has a feature called “pages” which allows you to easily create web pages. For example, you could add an “about me” page with your biography, and a link to that page would be automatically added to your sidebar. You can even create an entire web site using pages on WordPress.com, with a custom home page and your blog as one of the sub-pages.

    Regards,
    Elaine Powell
