THRUSTON/THURSTON GENEALOGY

Thruston Coat of Arms

The spelling of the name Thurston in America was previously Thruston.  Later records show the spelling as Thurston. The Thruston/Thurston family of Virginia was a very prominent family. A hand written genealogy of the family was originally compiled by John Thruston (1606-1675) and continued by John’s son Edward. I had the good fortune to get photo copies of that genealogy at the archives of the Rockefeller Library in Colonial Williamsburg several years ago. The Thruston/Thurston Family Genealogy was also published in the William and Mary Quarterly Magazine, which is in bound book form in many libraries.

The photos of the Thruston/Thurston genealogy that I took are below:

Malachias Thruston was born about 1580 in Wellington, Somersetshire, England and died in 1651 in Buckland, Somerset, England.  He and his wife are buried in Buckland Church (photo shown below) in Somerset, England

Buckland St Marys THRUSTON

The first (top of page) person shown on the Descendant Chart is Malachias Thruston. He and his wife had four children: John, b. 1606, Edward, b. 1608, Elizabeth, b. 1608, and another daughter (name unknown), b. 1610.

There is in the possession of the Thruston family a vellum bound and metal-clasped book; on its yellow leaves are inscribed various family records, scraps of history, receipts, prescriptions, etc. The first entry is as follows: “John Thruston, ye son of Malachias Thruston, of Wellington in Somerset, was baptized in Tepisk Church of Wellington, ye 8th day of June, 1606.The contents of this book, with the baptismal, marriage and burial entries, in the parish church register and the records of the names of John, Edward and Malachias Thruston, in the register at Oxford, furnish an accurate family history, traceable to the present time.

According to the pedigree signed and registered by his grandson for the College of Arms, Malachias married Justian Fursland dau of Andrew Fursland of Wallington Somerset and died Feb 1651 in (?West) Buckland, Somerset, England, where she was buried. (Other sources believe he possibly married x Chamberlain 1605 in Buckland, Somerset, England. She was born Abt. 1584 in Buckland, Somerset, England). (As yet I have no source for this information.)

John Thruston (Generation 1)

(For the purpose of this genealogy, John Thruston (b. 1606 – d. 1675) is Generation No. 1)

From the book Virginia Prominent Families, Vol. 1-4: The John Thruston, who is supposed to have made the first entries in the old memorandum book, was Chamberlain of Bristol many years. He married twice, his first wife “being Thomasine Rich, ye daughter of Peter Rich, preacher of God’s word in Yeatsburg (?), in the County of Wills (Wiltshire), was baptized in ye parish church of Yeatshire (?), the 24th of August, 1604.” John Thruston was the son of Malachias Thruston and the old Thruston place at West Buckland, near Wellington, was standing, 1896. Several entries now follow, interesting but not to our purpose: then-“This 15 day of March, 1629, my sonne Robert Thruston was born and baptized the 19 day of the same month. Sponsors Edith Dier, Mr. Robert Rogers, Mr. Mathew Warner.” “My wife died ye 30 day of November, about seven ye clock at night, and was buried the 2d of December, 1649, in the morning at St. Thomas”.
Volume IV
Chapter XI
Thruston Family.
Excerpts from the old John Thruston memorandum book:

The 12th of January, 1648, I was married to me second wife.”
“The 27th of February, 1648, I had my fall in the river.”
This John Thruston by his two marriages had twenty-four children; only a small proportion of them attained maturity, and the entries relating to his life follow below:

Of the children of John Thruston, Edward and Malachias settled in Norfolk Co., Va.; the book aforesaid fell into the hands of Dr. Edward Thruston, who writes:

One of the family followed the fortunes of William of Normandy and became his standard bearer. When William appealed to the Papal authority, to decide the quarrel between him and the Saxon Harold, the Pope, setting aside justice, decided in the Norman’s favor and consecrated the banner to be borne in the invasion of England. The standard bearer’s name was Tostien, and tradition says he was a nephew of the Conqueror. In the battle of Hastings, “so brave was he, so well he led,” and so loud his cries of “En avant,” that some despairing Saxon, caught at the sound and called him “Thruston,” and Tostien adopted the sobriquet as his name. In the division of land which followed the conquest, the Doomsday Book says, the “Story-haunted Camelot” fell to the Thrustons.

(2) From William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Papers, Vol. 2, No. 4. (Apr., 1894), pp. 219-229 and Vol. 4, No. 1:

Probably one of the most interesting and satisfactory family records preserved in America is that of the Thruston family. This family came to Virginia from the city of Bristol (England), which contributed so much to the settlement of Virginia.

The Thruston Family of Virginia

(Copyright of the Wm & Mary Quarterly prevents me from entering the actual wording from the Quarterly. I will instead list just facts of names & dates…)

John Thruston was the Chamberlain of Bristol. He was baptized June 8, 1606 and died April 8, 1675. He was the son of Malachias Thurston of Wellington, in Somersetshire. He married Thomasine, daughter of Peter Rich, who was the minister of Yeatsbury (?) in Wiltshire, and had 24 children. All those children died under age except for the following:

Thomasine, who married John Hunt on Sept. 11, 1653

Justian, died age 21

Alice, died age 26

Ann

Malachy

Edward

Justian (it was not uncommon to give a 2nd child the name of a deceased sibling)

James

In M. Gordon Thruston’s book “The Thruston Family History” #2 Malacy Thruston was married to Martha Ivy.

Also, I am still working on getting my lineage to you as well. Thank you for being so patient. How is your husband faring?

    Good day Elaine,
I am interested in two sons of John Thurston & Sarah Mynne…John b 1750 and Robert b 1759. From the photocopies above, I am not able to read the notes on these two and wonder if you have been able to transcribe the information. I would greatly appreciate any assistance.
    Patricia

  • Elaine Powell

    Hi Patricia,
Yes, John Thurston, b. 20 May 1750 and Robert, b. 14 Jan 1759 are indeed sons of John Thurston & Sarah Mynne. Let me know if you have more questions.

    Hi Elaine,

I’m real impressed with your work. I love the heritage of my husband’s ancestors. Do you have this in a gedcom file? Or is this info on Ancestry.com?

    Thanks
    Morgen

  • I have been told by Ancestry that the name of my line (Trusty) probably is an off shoot of the family name Thurston. The Trusty line started in the 1640 in the colonies from England and follows the same migration patterns.

Thank you for making this available for those who cherish the historical paths of their families. My perusal was light, so I will look forward to returning many times. If I am able to find a connection I will let you know

  • Hi Elaine,

I am very interested in the information that you posted that the second wife of Charles Mynn Thruston was Elizabeth Ware. I have a 47.7 CM match to one of the Ware descendants of Virginia. This is an unusually significant DNA match and it means that we share a common woman ancestor, in our case, in Virginia sometime in the 1700s (which I’m able to track via the X chromosome because of a double cousin marriage in my family). In addition, I have DNA matches to Charles Mynn Thrustons’s line.

My 3rd great-grandmother, Elizabeth, married Charles Cornwell in Fauquier County Virginia circa 1796 and they named their first child Charles Thruston Cornwell. This is the same line that I’m able to track via the X Chromosome match with the Ware descendants and I’m wondering whether Charles Mynn Thruston and Elizabeth Ware had any children or if you could tell me anything else about this Elizabeth Ware and her marriage to Charles Mynn Thruston. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    Hi,
I have been looking for many years for my ancestor named Bartlett Thurston who was born in Virginia in 1787. Have you ever run across this name? He moved to Kentucky and shows up on a tax record in 1811. The trail has grown cold for many of us who have been searching for years. Thank you.

  • Cristina Strike

Dear Elaine! I´m wondering if these Thurston´s families are related with the famous british clarinettits Frederick (John) Thurston. His father was also named Frederick Thurston. Frederick was born in Lichfield, England

    Thank you very much

    Cristina Strike

Would be nice if more male Thurstons would consider YDNA testing, overall the number that have tested for example through FTDNA are very low. It might help better understand the origins for this group, or at least on lineage.

Hi Elaine and others – has anyone tried to track down Brown Thurston’s collection of letters that he amassed to create his Thurston Genealogies book? The Thurston reunion mentions the years of letter correspondence he had done.

I think this would open a treasure of information, because Brown likely only took excerpts from many of these letters – especially on non-direct-line Thurston families.

It may also help my brickwall!

  • Ron Thurston

I was unaware of this branch of Thurston’s until I ran across your website. My great grandfather several generations removed was John Thurston from Wrentham, Suffolk County England. Apparently their ancestors were from Hoxne and are buried in St. Peter and Paul church in this town. Are you aware of any genetic links between these two families?

  • Was T. M. James of Kansas City, MO related to Jesse and Frank James? T.M. James was a well known distributor of domestic and foreign china and other items, from about 1890 into the 1920’s.

I searched here but did not find an entry for Robert Alexander Thruston, son of Judge Buckner Thruston, born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1806, later settled in Dayton, Ohio in 1830 where he married Marianna Phillips, had three children including my great-grandmother Eliza Phillips Thruston, and died while still a young man. If anyone can provide information about him, or can share any sort of image of him, I would be most grateful.

This is very interesting, we might be cousins! I have been digging for years and this is the closest I’ve come to finding a compilation of my heritage. Thanks for your hard work!

Hi Elaine: I found your site quite by accident, I was searching for James Families that lived in Maine in the 1700-1800’s.
My Hames family as far as I can go started with John James and Sarah Hutchins, they married in 1793 Balstown , Maine. They had at least 5 sons, all of which migrated to Ohio by 1820. Do you by chance have anything on this John James? Thanks Ken

  • Karie

Hello! I’m excited to find this resource… Thanks for your hard work! I’m having a bit of trouble figuring out who the parents are of Edward, born 5 Feb 1680. Can you help? Much appreciated!

  • Bonnie

Do you think that there is any way that the Thurstons in canada my great grandfather was George Thurston born 1866 are connected with this line of Thurstons?

  • George Thruston

Hello, I sent you an email with more information regarding my family history. Did this find you? I also have a lot more original papers etc that I would love to start digging into and if you want to see this too that would be great. The papers (and medals/dress sword) were bought by my uncle from an American man about 5/6 years ago, as he also had an interested in the family.
