There are problems with some of the frequently listed children of Jacob
and Rebecca Crabtree Hatfield.

I have not, thus far, found good evidence for Vandalia. She is said to
have been born in 1874 but does not show on the 1880 census with Jacob
and Rebecca.
 
Nancy, Orrey and John Melvin do show up on the 1880 census, so there is a
good likelihood that they fit.
 
Laura does not show on the 1880 census, but she is said to have died in
1878, so it would be reasonable for her to be missing. Harrison does not
show on the 1880, but it is said that he was born that year and it is
possible that he might have been gone by 1900 so, I have nothing
definitive to include or not include him.
 
We know that Chloe Ann, Arson (Orrison), Hafford (Herriford), Wm Sidney,
Martha Alice, and Freeland show up in 1900 with Jacob and Rebecca.
 
Ura, Destry, Henry, and Ireland are the most disturbing. I do not see
evidence for them and after 1910 Jacob is 68 years and the only other gap
that might "hide" four children is between 1880 and 1900, but it is
unlikely that four children could be born in that period and none show up
in 1900, especially since there are other children born during that
period who do show up on the 1900 census.
 
Consequently I believe that there were 11-13 children, not the 16 who are
frequently seen.
