per Ron Blackburn:
James Hatfield was born on Blackberry Creek in Pike County Kentucky on 19
December 1831. He was the son of George and Nancy Whitt Hatfield. James's
grandfather Ephraim Hatfield had moved his family to Kentucky sometime
between 1820 and 1824.
When Ephraim Hatfield first come to Kentucky he settled in a hollow near
the gap of Blackberry Creek and Pond Creek, It was called Eph's Hollow
and was later changed to "Sheep Hollow". The creek is now called Hatfield
Branch and flows past the replica of Jeremiah Hatfield's house into
Blackberry Creek

James's parents George and Nancy Whitt Hatfield were both born in Russell
County Va. George apparently returned to Russell County Virginia around
1825 and married Nancy Whitt. George was a deacon in the Enon Mate Creek
church and was also elected to be a constable in 1827.

George and Nancy first owned 150 acres of land, at the forks of
Blackberry Creek, which they purchased from George's brother-in-law
Coonrad Riffe. Around 1834 they purchased 150 acres from Thomas Price
beginning below the Blue Springs on William Dial's line and adjacent to
Conrad Riffe property. This land included the Blue Springs. It is assumed
that James Hatfield was born at the forks of Blackberry Creek and grew up
at the Blue Springs. James learned the skills of a frontiersman from his
father, older brothers and uncles. Like other pioneer families, the
Hatfields were close nit and took care of each other. James farmed,
hunted and attended church on Sunday at the Enon Mate Creek Church.
James had one older sister and two older brothers when he was born. The
next six children born in this family after James were also boys. Thus of
the first 10 children in this family 9 were boys. This had to be a lively
group for the parents and the one sister. Caring for the younger family
members, raising food to feed the family and caring for the animals and
gardens consumed much of their time.
As a boy James would have heard the stories of life in old Virginia. His
grandmother Annie would have related her stories of loosing her first
husband David Music and being kidnapped by Indians. The Indians were
taking Annie back to Ohio when settlers from the Virginia settlement
rescued her and her children at present day Hasi Virginia. James would
have liked the part about Annie's son Elexious who was tied to the bottom
of a horse because he tried to escape. His Grandfather Ephraim also had
plenty of tall tales about his days as an Indian scout in the war of the
Revolution.

The early life of young James must have included a lot of hard work and
most probably trips back to old Virginia for supplies. Game was plentiful
in the Mountains of Eastern Kentucky and it could be traded for salt ,
iron tools and cloth. The 1850 Pike County Key census shows James living
at his father's home with ten other siblings. They were Ransom, Elexious,
Anderson, Johnson, Boswell, George, Jeremiah, Lydia, Wallace and Nancy.
His older brother Madison and sister Mary had married and started their
own homes. James grand mother Annie was living in the home of James's
uncle Jeremiah not far from where he lived. Grand father Ephraim Hatfield
died in 1847 and his grandmother Annie died in 1859. They were buried at
the cemetery behind Jeremiah's home which is now called the Anderson
Hatfield cemetery.

He attended the Enon Church which was located in Logan County Virginia
located about 5 or six miles from his home. Reverend John Ferrell was the
minister at the Enon church and James's father George Hatfield was a
deacon. I suppose that James Hatfield met his wife at church and he
probably made it to church ever Sunday to see the beautiful daughter of
John and Jennie Taylor Ferrell. In those days you had to go to church to
meet a girl. Mary Ferrell was born 2 March 1832 in Logan County Virginia
(now WV).
James married Mary Ferrell 12 August 1852 most probably married by Mary's
father John Ferrell in Logan County. There are no records of a marriage
in Pike County Key so it is assumed that they were married in Logan
County Va. James was 21 and Mary was 20 when they married in 1852. In
those days a girl named Mary was many times called by the nickname of
Polly. This Mary was also called Polly. She was from a very large family
and had 14 brothers and sisters. Her father was a land owner and had
political influence as well as being a respected member of the clergy.

1860 - James and Mary were living on Mate Creek, Logan County Virginia in
1860. Their household included 4 children. James was 28 and Polly was 25
years old. The children were Nancy (8), John (6), Howard (4), and George
(5/12). James had received a Virginia land grant in 1859 and they were
living on this land in 1860. A description of the land states that it had
a common boundary with Ephraim Hatfield which is confirmed in the 1860
census. This would have been the time of our Civil War. James's family/
brothers fought for the Union. There are no records of James's service in
the civil war in Pike of Logan counties however the 1870 Pike census
shows son Johnson as being born in 1864 and born in Ohio. In 1860 James
would have living in the midst of confederate sympathizers which included
his wife's family.

1870 - The 1870 Pike County Ky census indicates that James moved his
family back to Kentucky around 1866. Daughter Jane was born in 1866 and
born in Ky. James was living on Blackberry Creek in the same area that he
was born. His parents George and Nancy were living a short distance from
him. It appears that James was living next door to his brother Anderson
Hatfield. James was listed as 38 and Mary was 37 years old. Their house
included 6 children: Nancy (16), John (14), Jeremiah (8), Johnson (6),
Jane (4) and Lucy W (1). Apparently the children Howard and George had
died since the last census. A woman Jane Williamson (24) was also living
in James's home.

1880 - According to the 1880 Logan County West Virginia census, James had
moved his family back across Tug River before 1871. Daughter Lydia was
born in 1871 and born in WV. Lydia was no doubt named after James's
sister who had died in her teens. James was 50 and Mary was 49 years old
in 1880. Their House included the following listed children: Johnson (17)
census shows he was born in Kentucky, Jeary (17), Jane (13), Lucy (10),
and Lydia (9). Rhoda Cline an S-I-L of Nancy Hatfield was also living in
James's home in 1880. Son John had married Jane Rutherford in Pike County
Ky on Nov 20, 1873 at the home of John Rutherford. In 1880 John lived up
Blackberry Creek next door to Jeremiah Hatfield. Daughter Nancy had
married Peter Cline and had 2 children in 1880. Peter and Nancy Cline
also lived in Logan County Virginia in 1880.

1900 - Sometime between 1880 and 1900 James and his family left Pike
County Kentucky and settled in north central Kentucky. James and Mary
were living at White Sulphur, Bath Co Ky in 1900. 15 year old grandson
James Wilson was also living in their home. James father George Hatfield
had died 21 Mar 1883. He lived to be 79 years old. James's mother Nancy
Whitt Hatfield died 13 Dec 1891. She was 84 years old. They are both
buried on the Hatfield Cemetery at Blue Springs. Their children were all
married and had their own homes.

Nancy Hatfield Cline had died ca1887. Her family was living in Martin
County Ky.

John was living in Salt Lick, Menifee County Ky.

Jeremiah married Barbara Ellen Kasha ca1892. He was living at White
Sulphur, Bath County Ky.

Johnson married Sarah Carter in 1883 (Rowan Co Ky). Johnson was living at
White Sulphur, Bath Co Ky in 1900.

Jane married Leander Wilson in 1882 (Logan Co WV) Jane died in 1884. Her
son James Wilson was living with James and Mary Hatfield in 1900.

Lucy married James McGill ca 1891. The McGill family was living in Bath
County in 1900.

Lydia married William Johnson ca 1892. The Johnson Family was living in
Spencer, Montgomery Co Ky in 1900.

1910 - James and Mary were living in the home of son Johnson in 1910.
They were living on Crain Creek Road in Fleming Co Ky. James was 78 and
Mary was listed as 76 years old. The census listed them as being married
58 years or married in 1852.

1911 - James Hatfield died 25 Mar 1911. He was buried at Olympia
Kentucky.

1919 - John Hatfield oldest son of James and Mary died on 18 Jan 1919. He
was living at Preston, Bath County Ky. John died of pneumonia.

1920 - Sometime after James died and before 1920 Lucy and James McGill
relocated to Middletown, Butler County, Ohio. Lucy apparently took her
mother to Ohio as Mary is listed in James McGill's home (1201 York St.)
in the 1920 census.

1924 -Mary Hatfield wife of James died on 20 Dec 1924. Mary died in
Middletown Ohio and was returned to Olympia Kentucky for burial. Lydia
Hatfield Johnson was listed as the informant on Mary's death certificate.

1931 - Lydia Hatfield Johnson died 8 Jan 1931. She died at Stanton,
Powell County Ky.

1933- Lucy Hatfield McGill died on 9 Feb 1933 In Middletown, Butler
County Ohio. She was buried at the Woodside Cemetery.

1948 - Jeremiah Hatfield died 7 Mar 1948. He died at Georgetown, Brown
County, Ohio.

1959 - Johnson Hatfield died 7 Feb 1959. He died at Manchester, Adams
County, Ohio
