The Hatfields, Vances, Gibsons, Smiths & Musicks were widespread and influential families in SW Virginia from before the Revolution (in which all of them served, on the frontier) to c1800; in the 1790s, many members of the Hatfield, Vance & Gibson families moved into Kentucky & Tennessee. Ale married Milly Gibson, and followed his father into Wayne Co, KY--the family's understanding is that Milly was a bit too "civilized" for her husband--and Ale soon took up with Elizabeth Young, setting her up in a cabin on Station Camp Creek. For several years, he managed to maintain 2 households, having offspring by both women, but Milly apparently threw him out c 1812--but refused him a divorce. Ale moved to Greene Co, IN, joining Ale's brothers, Joseph & William, who had already made the move. Milly followed him in 1836, gave him his divorce, and returned to live with her son-in-law, John McCoy, in Campbell Co, TN [listed there in 1850]. Ale & Elizabeth then formally married, giving his "second" family some legitimacy (though such arrangements were not uncommon on the frontier...). After Ale's death, Elizabeth lived with her son, Washington Hatfield, until her death.   CENSUS: KY 1810, Wayne Co, p. 354 KY 1820, Wayne Co, p. 101 TN 1830, Fentress Co, p. 15 IN 1840, Greene Co, p. 218" ---------------------------------------- The following appears in the Greene County court records relative to the probate of Ale's estate:   Thursday morning nine o'clock.
