WARING>WAREN>WEAREN>WARREN Family

Arthur Wearen/Warren and 3rd wife Jane Cochran

This webpage attempts to share some of the Family History of my grandmother’s WARREN Family. The spelling of the name has changed many times over the years. The immigrant ancestor Richard spelled the name WARING. Various records show different spellings for this family surname. According to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 34, Long Island Public Records show that the name was variously written Waring, Warring, Waron, Waren, and Warren. In addition, subsequent descendants spelled the name several different ways, including Waren, Wearen, Wearren, Warin, and Warren. I have been in contact with members of this family that still use the spelling of WARING, and Wearen!

FYI — This is NOT the Warren family who sailed to America on the Mayflower. Some online genealogies have confused our Warren family with the Mayflower Warren family; however, there is no connection, which has been proven by DNA testing.

WARING to WARREN

With the help of over 30 years of research by Glen Warren (my 3rd cousin, once removed), I will attempt to briefly include much of the known early history of MY Warren family, so that other Warren/Wearen/Waring family members might find their family roots.

My cousin William Wallace (Wally) Warren and his father before him researched the WARREN family history for many years. Wally spent five years writing “An American Family Called Warren” which was released several years ago. The book is written in narrative form, has 15 chapters with an index of over 2500 Waring, Wearen, Warren, etc. and allied family names. Each of six separate branches are located in the text as well as in 21 graphic charts that were generated with a computer program which traces the family generation by generation helping to sort out who is who. There are stories of their activities interwoven with current events that will intrigue, entertain and inform you and your children for many years to come.

Unfortunately Wally Warren has passed away and no more copies of the Warren book are available for purchase. (There is a free digital version online at https://familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titledetails&titleno=835725&disp=An+American+family+called+Warren) We have hopes that one day Wally’s son and daughter will assist  in publishing an update to the book. With that in mind, I am collecting information about descendants of these Waring/Wearen/Warren families. Please contact me if you have information to share about this family or if you would like more information.

Information from Wally tells us that research reveals us to be descended from Richard Waring, who came to America from England. Some have identified them as Warrens, but extensive verbatim records throughout the last half of the 1600’s consistently list Richard and his descendants as Warings, as did a family historian of the Waring line more than a century ago. A phonetic sound of that name has carried over into various spelling changes (Waring, Wearen, Wearren, Waren, Warren) since about 1700. While there could be some difference of opinion as to the “true” family name of this line, there can be no legitimate refuting of the fact that various branches and generations have and still are using each of the surnames mentioned here.

Wally’s book incorrectly states that our ancestor Richard Waring is the son of Christopher Warren and Alice Webb. That is INCORRECT. Also, the Richard Waring Sr. that he shows was married to Elizabeth Ivatt is also incorrect.  And so I have removed all references to Christopher on the quotes from Wally’s book from my website. I will start this from what I know to be fact — from books and documents that I’ve personally collected. That starts with Richard Waring of Long Island, New York in the 1600s. There is a Richard Waring who married Miss Akerly. Also, Richard Waring  was NOT married to Elizabeth Ivatt. So I have removed all references to Elizabeth Ivatt on this website. I will be happy to change or add to this webpage if anyone can provide credible documentation.

There is a wiki tree at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Waring-284#_note-0 that has a well researched history of this early family and it takes the family back several more generations to Nicholas Waryng Esq. (1415-1480). For sources and bios, click on the link above and then click on “son of” to go back to earlier generations.

DNA TESTING

If you think that you might be a descendant of the Richard Waring of this family, I encourage you to get your DNA tested. There is currently a WARREN Family Tree DNA project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/warren/default.aspx?section=yresults. There is also a WARING DNA project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Waring/default.aspx?section=yresults

Since there are more participants in the Warren project, my recommendation is to join that project, even if your name is spelled Waring or Wearen, or other spellings.

I have been contacted my men whose surname is spelled Wearren, Waring, Waren, and Warren and they are all descendants of this Richard WARING. The more males we get to join the project, the more information we can find out about our ancestors and perhaps we can find out which WARING family in England we all descend from!

****************************

In the Book A History of Long Island, From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time by Peter Ross, William Smith Pelletreau, Chapter XII, Pg. 268, Brookhaven:

“The first purchase of land was made in 1655 from the Setalcott (Setauket) Indians by a party of six pioneers, who were evidently acting on behalf of others, prospecting, as it were, for a spot on which to establish a colony. Five of those were from Massachusetts – John Scudder, John Swezie, Jonathan Porter, Roger Chester and Thomas Charles, and one, Thomas Mabbs or Mapes, belonged to Southold and was one of the original settlers of that township. Probably he accompanied the others as being a man of experience in dealing with the natives; it could hardly be because he had any knowledge of the land. The party had with them the usual collection of coats, hatchets, powder, knives and the like with which to do a land business with the Indians, and appear to have made a pretty good bargain.

Pretty soon those for whom the prospectors were acting began to arrive; most of them were from New England, but several came from other portions of Long Island, from Southampton and even from Jamaica [Long Island]. Within a few years the following were found in the settlement according to a list in Thompson”s History:”

Among the 54 men listed are Richard Waring, Robert and Samuel Akerly. Robert Akerly was the father of Mary Akerly, who was the wife of Richard Waring Jr. Samual Akerly is Lydia’s brother. There are many listings of court records, including land purchases in several different Brookhaven, Long Island, New York records for Richard Waring Sr. and Jr., and Robert and Samual Akerly. The page below confirms the above information.

Richard Waring Sr. lived in Brookhaven until his death at Oyster Bay, Long Island in 1719.

I do not know what happened to Richard’s sons Thomas Doxie Waring and Peter Waring.

The children of Richard Waring Jr. all moved on to other locations — John (name changed to Waren) to Pennsylvania; Richard (the 3rd, whose name changed to Waren) to Westchester, New York; Edmund to Connecticut; and Michael (name sometimes Waren in records) to Stamford, Connecticut.

Richard Jr.’s son John Waring (spelled Warren in some records), is mentioned on page 440 of the book The Early History of Southampton, L. I. New York, with Genealogies, as follows: “Genealogies — 122. Warren or Waring, John, of Cold Spring, in town of Oyster Bay, has wife Elizabeth, dau. of John White, and she appears to be an only child, and they have son John Warren, to whom they give all John White’s property, which he possessed at his death and which they probably had held by will in trust.”

Family of Arthur Wearen/Warren

The below information on my line of Warrens came from my cousin Glendon Warren, and was published in the Butler County History Book:

Arthur Warren (1810-1895) was born in the Buckeye area of Garrard County, Kentucky, and died at Warren’s Mill in Butler County. Warren’s Mill received its name from the operation of a water powered mill on land he bought in 1848 on Indian Camp Creek. The land was then referred to as the Mosby James mill site. The community was thereafter known as Warren’s Mill. Mosby had operated a sawmill, but Arthur apparently converted it to a grist mill. Mosby’s grandson, Lycurgus Reid, wrote on 1921 of having seen the sawmill in operation, and that it was so slow that grandfather could take off for lunch while one cut was being made on a log. The place has since become known as Gilstrap, but its original name has been retained by the old Warren’s Mill Cemetery.

Genealogical research has recently revealed Arthur to have been a grandson of Virginia born Jacob Wearren, who moved to Madison County, Kentucky by 1795. He then moved to Lincoln County and back to Madison before settling in Garrard County in 1804. Within a few decades many of his descendants had changed to the more familiar Warren name, but some in that area still use the Wearen or Wearren name. Arthur appears beyond a reasonable doubt to have been the second child of John Wearen, one of the seven identified children of Jacob to have had families in northeastern Garrard County.

Arthur married as a Wearen in 1831 to Martha “Patsy” Arbuckle (1812-1846), daughter of Samuel and Tabitha Drinkard Arbuckle, and moved to Butler County in 1839 with the first three of their six children. They were joined there in 1846 by his brother, Liberty (1811-1850), who also had six children. They continued to use the Wearen name for a while, as shown by tax lists, but they were otherwise generally listed by others as Warrens. Liberty was buried as a Wearren, Arthur as a Warren. With the exception of Arthur’s grandson, Finis Wearren, all their descendants have used the Warren name. All Warrens with a Warren’s Mill ancestral home background are descended from Arthur or Liberty. There is no known relationship to the Warrens who lived in the southern part of Butler County.

Arthur married Susan Kessinger in 1853 and they had two children, He married Jane Cochran in 1858, and they also had two children. His son, Samuel Francis (1835-1911) was a Civil War Confederate soldier, conscripted while in Arkansas. [Elaine has found no proof that Samuel Francis Warren served in the Civil War.] Another son, John Logan (1844-1905, was a Union soldier volunteer. They learned after the war of having been in the opposing forces at the Battle of Iron Mountain. Both returned to Warren’s Mill and lived out their lives there, with John dying of a lung ailment of wartime origin.

Descendants of Liberty intermarried in the 1800’s with Clark, Embry, Cochran, James, Bradley, Allen, Adams, and Arbuckle families. A daughter, Martha Green (1850-1929), married Richard S. James, becoming ancestor to many James families in several states. Kentucky State Representative Willard Allen is a fifth generation descendant of Liberty Warren.

Descendants of Arthur intermarried in that period with Hobdy, James, Gully, Gardner, Atchison, Short, Bennett, Butler, Liles, and Goodall families. His son, John Logan, was father of William Volney (1867-1938) who had fifteen children born in Butler County. One of these, Ercel Haward Warren (1896-1957), served two terms in the 1940’s as Butler County Court Clerk. He had five children, one of whom is this writer, Glendon E. Warren (1926- ). A genealogy of the Jacob Wearren line has been compiled, and is available at the Butler County Historical Society and the Butler and Ohio County libraries, since 1986

In about 1904 the following family history was written by my (Elaine Powell’s)  great-grandfather, Alexander Arthur Warren (1868-1947). The original handwritten copy of this history was found in the attic of the Warren log house near Warrens Mill, Kentucky. No attempts have been made to correct any misspelled words, incomplete sentences, etc. I’d like to thank my cousin, Glen Warren for his many years of Warren family research which made it possible for me to acquire this information.

I have published this information here in the hope that other Warren family researchers might be able to gain some knowledge of their family. Feel free to email me if you find a connection or you have more information to share.

Warren Family History, written by Alexander Arthur Warren (1868-1947)  in ca 1904

“Arthur and Martha Warren moved from near “Lancaster” County seat of Garrard County, in a farm wagon and stopped at Graham school house, about 100 yards west of the present school house. They lived there about three months, then moved to Morgantown in a farm wagon and crossed Green River at Wilson place diagonal up the river on opposite shore (forded the river).
Morgantown at that time was very crude. The yard fences were mostly made of fence-rales. (worm fences)
Arthur Warren worked at the Carpenter trade and cabinet work. While there John L., the youngest child was born. He then moved back near Graham school house to the John Austin place. There his wife Martha died, Arthur then let Uncle Joe James take Samuel F. and J.L., the baby, to keep for him until he could do better.
While there J.L., just in school age, had to be chastised and he threatened to quit boarding if Uncle Joe did not let up on him. (it was all free gratis).
While living at this place Arthur Warren married Becky (this should be Susan) Kessinger. Sister to Jim and Bill Kessenger. To this union was born one child, Smith, (a girl). She married George Gardner, he was known as (Grabbers) He was supposed to be a minister of the Gospel (?) Church named Innominata.
When Arthur Warren moved from this place he went to the then Frank James place, where the Warren’s Mill school and Church now stands. At that time it took in running from the Boy Butler place on hill above Gilstrap straight west to Zett Nomes place, then North to Bryant place, thence East to the Elmore Stewart line, thence South to the beginning.
While there, he, Arthur, married his third wife, Jane M. Cochran, daughter of Samuel and Millie Cochran. She had one son Andy Cochran, who died in the Civil War. To this union were born Thomas Jefferson and Martha Warren, who died in her teens. She was “afflicted” from childhood. Thomas Jefferson Warren married Janie Atchison To this union was born one son, Finis Warren.
Samuel F. Warren went with [his daughter-in-law’s father) Alexander Hobdy, W.E. (odd) Hudson, and Volney James and their families to Corning, Arkansas and while there the Civil war broke out and he was conscripted into the Confederate Army and fought and dodged and did patrol on guard duty through the war. At one time his beat was on a 12 mile of plank road that crossed ‘Nigger Wool’ swamp when it was a wilderness of water, grass, buck bushes, and cane from knee high to twenty feet. The road crossed from Grey’s Ridge to what is now Morehouse. To-day the swamp is in a high state of cultivation and will grow most anything that grows in the United States. The soil is from three to twenty feet deep and to-day some of the best roads in the state crosses that swamp.
While he was in the war he was in the battle of the Iron Mountain and learned after the war his baby brother, John Logan, was in the same battle. While he was on the mountain he was on a six mule load of lead “pigs” (about the size of a paving brick) and the backing pin that held the neck yoke jumped out and they had to whip the team about one mile.
When they moved back to Kentucky they used Strap Skien wagons drawn by oxen and used coal tar for lubercation. There were S.F. and wife, W. E. Hodson,Wife, and one daughter, Lizzie, Sam Hobdy, Wife and five daughters, Acrata, then old Hudsons wife, Eveline then S.F.Warrens wife Sallie (Sis), Idel, and Fannie. Mrs. Volney James and two children, WmM. James (Brud), and Berrilla James accompanied by Liberty Smith (Todd) Warren.
They came North on Walnut Ridge to Poplar Bluff, forded Black River there then East to dexter, and then North East across Nigger Wool swamp on the famous plank road. While crossing on that road Brud’s Oxen balked on a bridge and backed the wagon off the bridge and S.F.W. who was behind him whipped his team up and pushed him on across.
John Logan Warren, youngest son and sixth child of Arthur and M. Warren, (nee-Arbuckle) was born May 11th, 1844, in Coley County, Ill., near Mattoon, Ill. His Father moved to Butler County, Ky. When J.L. was a wee baby and in a short time his Mother died and John L. had a hard time for awhile. When he was a small child his father let old Uncle Joe James keep him, and he went to school some when in the Graham school neighborhood, as Joe James lived near the John Austin place. At the breaking out of the Civil war in 1861 he went into the Union Army and faught with them until the close of the war. John L. was in lots of hard fought battles but never got a scratch, but his health was impared through explosions and finally lost one lung,–Came back and married Miss Burilla C. James, second child and only daugher of Volney and Martha James, on November 12th, 1866, in Butler County, Kentucky.
Burilla C. James was born August 31st, 1846 in Ohio County, Kentucky.
Martha Evelyn Warren, first child and second child of J.L. and B.C. Warren was born April 29th, 1870- Eugene and Minnie J. Warren were born August 23rd, 1875. Minnie J. Warren died Feb. 1st, 1879 and Eugyne died May 14th, 1890.
Everett E. Warren, fifth child and third son of J.L. and B.C. Warren was born April 14th, 1888 in Butler County, Ky.
Francis Arbuckle, son of Tabitha (Drinkard) was born in 1801 and married Miss Sevastian of Garrard County, Kentucky. They had four children- John Wesley, (William Drinkard), Martha, Samuel, Tabitha Arbuckle.
John Wesley the oldest son was a soldier in the Mexican war under old Zac Taylor. When the war was over John W. Arbuckle came back to Garrard Co., Ky. And married Miss Lucy McMillion-oldest daughter of Robert McMillion. They had eight children – George Ann, Mart Gert, Callie, Belle, Betty, Ella, and Oliva Cordie also one boy, Robert Fulton Arbuckle.”

The rest of this Warren Family History contains only dates of births, marriages and deaths. I have included those persons and dates in the descendancy chart shown below.

Research by another Warren researcher has shown that the Martin Warren/Waren listed below is NOT the son of Michael Waren and Catherine Hinton. This Martin Warren was a son of James Warren, Sr. of Lincoln Co., KY. And that James Warren Sr. was a brother to Capt. William Warren of Lincoln Co., KY and Hugh Warren, Sr. of Green Co., KY. Martin Warren was a Rev. War soldier and moved from KY and settled in Warrensburg, Missouri and that town is named after him.
