Charlotte McNelly Hello, I'm enjoying this site. My great grandfather was William Anderson (devil anse) Hatfield. My grandmother Mary Hatfield (dtr. of Anse) married my grandfather Frank Howes in Cabell Co. WV 7/4/1900. She was married first to a Simpkins, then Hensley, then Frank Howes. She had a son and dtr. by Simpkins but they both died of consumption around 8 yrs. of age. The prev. husbands died, one fell ...off a horse I was told. Mary and Frank Howes had four sons. James Anderson Howes (Anse) and Lindsey Howes and Jennings Harvey Howes who was my dad, he went by Harvey. And the fourth son was Joe Howes. They lived at Sarah Ann, on Island Creek. I was born there, the fourth of six children of Harvey Howes and Anna Grace Miller. I knew gr.grpa Anse moved from Blackberry Creek because of the danger there with the feud. The mountains and hollows gave him and his family more protection. We visited his gravesite many times on the hillside of Sarah Ann when I was growing up in WV. We moved to Bengal/Kistler coal camp when I was five, then moved away because of mine closings. My uncle Joe is buried in the Hatfield Cemetery at Sarah Ann. He was killed in a mining accident at the age of 34 leaving five small daughters in 1950-or `51. I bought 10 of Altina Waller's book called "Feud" Social Change in the Appalachians. She put it all into historical context. I gave one to each of my sisters and brothers and to my four kids, keeping one. WV Archives has a photo of my dad Harvey and his brother Lindsey as toddlers. I have the photo also. I've enjoyed all the posts. Thanks. October 18, 2011 at 5:57pm   [sic: married the Hensley then Simpkins, then Howes] ---------------------------------------------- [Living with William Anderson and Levicy Chafin Hatfield] Name: Mary Simpkins Titles and Terms: Event Type: Census Event Year: 1900 Event Place: Logan district (west side), Logan, West Virginia, United States District: 66 Gender: Female Age: 26 Marital Status: Widowed Race: White Race (Original): W Relationship to Head of Household: Head Relationship to Head of Household (Original): Head Number of Living Children: 2 Years Married: Birth Date: Feb 1874 Birthplace: West Virginia Marriage Year (Estimated): Immigration Year: Father's Birthplace: West Virginia Mother's Birthplace: Kentucky Mother of how many children: 3 Sheet Number and Letter: 2A Household ID: 21 Line Number: 18 Affiliate Name: The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Affiliate Publication Number: T623 GS Film Number: 1241763 Digital Folder Number: 004123457 Image Number: 00776 Household Gender Age Birthplace Head Mary Simpkins F 26 West Virginia Daughter Vicy Simpkins F 3 West Virginia Son Homer Simpkins M 1 West Virginia Servant Frank House M 26 West Virginia [Frank Howes]   https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12048-88018-98?cc=1325221 "United States Census, 1900", index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M9CT-DSZ : accessed 11 Mar 2014), Mary Simpkins, 1900.
