My Chafin connection is through Levicy Chafin Hatfield (my
great-grandmother) who married my great-grandfather, Capt.Wm.Anderson
(devil anse) Hatfield. I think their marriage was 1885. They had 13
children, their sixth child Mary Hatfield was my grandmother. She married
Frank Howes 7/3/1903, they had 4 sons together. James Anse b.1905 -
Lindsey b.1908 - Jennings Harvey Howes, my dad, b.1/25/1910 and Joe
Hatfield Howes b.1915 who is Betty Raylene Brown's dad. Anse Howes died
in 1938 and Lindsey ran away to TX in his teens. So daddy and Joe were
very close and our two families spent a lot of time together at Sarah
Ann, on Island crk. WV. Moved to Ohio in 1952 for work after uncle Joe
was killed in mine accident in 1951 (age 36). Uncle Joe is buried to the
left of gr-grandfather's monument in the Hatfield Cem. Daddy (Harvey
Howes) fell ill while at work in the stove plant in Newark, Ohio in 1958
and passed away at the age of 48. He's buried in Wilson Cem. Newark OH.
I'm in southern Ohio and my husband's suggestion of visiting daddy's
grave always made me cry. I hadn't figured out what my problem was. But I
decided he needed a marker and asked my siblings to pitch in for the
cost. Years went by and in the 1990s I decided I would buy him a marker.
I was sad he didn't have family there so the Portsmouth Monument company
carved a short story on the tombstone for me. I had it written that he
was a WV coal miner from Logan Co. WV. found work in Newark and that his
grandparents were Wm.Anderson (DA)Hatfield, leader of the famous feud and
Levicy Hatfield. It cost $800.00 + and Ports.Monument delivered it to
Newark and set the slab and stone for only $25.00. They did an excellent
job. We went to see it and I felt at peace, amazing that I shed no tears
but as I brushed grass clippings away, I looked up to see my wonderful
husband wipe away his tears.
