Here is some various info on Richard Hobday, who was the father of Alexander.

Richard Hobday's will dated Oct. 11, 1850 was probated in Sumner Co., TN in Will Book 3, page 150, July 1851, names wife Elizabeth, Also: Polly Edwards, Noah Hobdy, Rush Hobdy, Talitha Hobdy, William Hobdy, Frances Hobdy, Hugh Hobdy, John Hobdy, Robert M. Hobdy, Josiah Walton, executor. Witnesses signatures: John Cotton, A. J. Barrett.
Richard is the youngest son of Talitha Cotton and Robert Hobday from Bertie, North Carolina. He is a brother of William Hobdy buried in the Hobdy Cemetery Sumner County. Richard married Betsy Cotton March 3, 1819 they had eleven known children. He was probably born in Bertie, North Carolina and was age two when the family came to Tennessee.
Burial:
Cotton Cemetery
Sumner County
Tennessee, USA
Richard (Dick) Hodby married Elizabeth Cotton in 1819. He died in Sumner Co TN in 1851. His Will ordered that all his slaves be sold at the death of his wife. Do not know if she died before or after Emancipation.

I have many copies of the files of Bob Law, a Hobday descendant, which you can see on this webpage -- http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1457&context=dlsc_mss_fin_aid&sei-redir=1#search=%22Alexander%20Rushtin%20Hobdy%20son%20Richard%20Hobdsy%22
I have yet to go thru all those files and put that info into my family tree program, so I might be adding more info for Rush.

A copy of the original marriage record for Alexander Hobday and wife Elizabeth Jackson is attached.

I hope this provides you with the info you are looking for.
Regards,

Elaine,

I just read your posting and wondered if you have any additional information on the Alexander Rushton Hobdy Line. He was married to Elizabeth Jane Jackson and their son Richard D. Hobdy was my great-
grandfather. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bob,

It's good to hear from you! We've emailed each other before, when I was just digging into my Hobday family. You and I are 5th cousins, 1x removed. After you told me about your research being on microfilm at the LDS library I ordered the films. In fact, I paid for them to stay at our Family History Center here in Orlando. It took me a while to get through the film, and I'm actually still not done. It takes so long to look at them and then either print them or save them. Their equipment at our FHC is slow.

I'm so glad to hear you've put Hobday/Hobdy family members on FindAGrave. I was just putting some JAMES family on their recently. My Sarah Ann James married Alexander Hobdy. He was the son of Thomas Cotton Hobdy. Perhaps he is the Thomas Hobday you refer to because he lived in Ohio Co., KY and then Butler Co. Thomas is actually listed as LOBDY in the Ancestry.com index. But I did send in a correction.

I had 14 different ancestors living in Butler Co. My grandmother's WARREN family lived in Butler Co. and married into the Hobdy family. I've been to Sumner Co. to do research on Robert Hobday.

I did read your info about the Cartwright family that included info on the Hobday family. Cartwright and Related Families by J. A. Cartwright, April 30, 1958, in the Tennessee State Library and Archives, Ms. Div. ac. no. 69-80, page 99. I would like to go to the Tennessee State Archives to do more research so if I get there, I'll look up the Cartwright book. My husband's Powell family came from the area around Sumner Co. so I've got to look them up also.

Yes, it was exciting to see the old Abingdon Parish Registers in the William & Mary College archives. I've attached the full page of that and also the section that shows Robert, son of Sarah. I've been trying to find out who Robert's father was. There is a lot of talk online about those early Hobdays and I don't know if they'll ever be sorted out. However, with DNA testing, perhaps we'll figure it out some day. However, there is not yet a Hobday DNA Project. I had my husband tested and it proved he is descended from the Powell line of Thomas Powell of Isle of Wight Co., VA ca. 1650. And I had my dad's DNA tested and found out that we are descended from the Pennsylvania Hatfields! THAT was exciting to know!!

Yes, I took all your charts and entered them into my Family Tree program. I saw that you have 9 children for Thomas Hobday. I found some information that I can't seem to find at the moment that shows an additional 3 children: Patience, William, and Emiline. But that might be incorrect info. I've attached a copy of your chart for my Thomas & Elizabeth Brackin Hobday/Hobdy. I'm sure that you saw that I did include your Hobday info on my website. I gave you credit but did not ask your permission, so I hope that is okay. You've done such an excellent job on the Hobday history and I wanted to include all that you've done to be able to help other researchers. So if you give me your official permission, I'll note that on my website.

I had the good fortune of being able to travel frequently with my husband from our home in Orlando to Williamsburg, Virginia where he worked for almost 3 years. I did a lot of research in county courthouses, libraries, and the Virginia State archives. I have stacks and stacks of papers from books and microfilm that I copied. I do have some Hobday info. It's going to take me YEARS to get all the stuff entered into my computer. When I find new Hobday info, I'll add it to my website.

I'll let you know when I go to Tennessee. Thanks for contacting me.

Your cousin, Elaine

Thank you for the work you have done on the Hobday family. I started working on the family in 1961 and did not publish a book since the computer was not in existance at that time and I have much too much information to enter it now. I did send all of my material to the Mormon Library for them to microfilm and they did on three 35mm rolls that you can get from any Mormon Famiy History Center if you are interested. I have also listed several Hobdy/Hobday graves on www.findagrave.com in Kentucky and Tennessee. One for Richard Hobday is in Sumner County TN and he used the Hobday spelling all of his siblings used Hobdy. There was a Thomas Hobdy that went to Ohio County Kentucky that also used the Hobday spelling. The most interesting find that I ran across was the Cartwright account of the Hobday famiy in North Carolina, they have a coplete copy of that in the TN State Library and Archives and I saw the original journal from a lady here in Nashville. I was wondering what the Abingdon Parish Register 1677 to 1761 was in the Hobday first page? I did not find the name on that page anywhere. I had known about Robert being the son of Sarah but had never seen the documnet just transcriptions of it so I was excited to see the actual page from you, thank you. I do have charts of all of the children of Robert Hobday that I could locate that were hand done at the time and only give the dates but not where the events took place. They are still a big help to me when people contact me about the family. Thank you again for all you have done.

I have also listed several Hobdy/Hobday graves on http://www.findagrave.com in Kentucky and Tennessee. One for Richard Hobday is in Sumner County TN and he used the Hobday spelling all of his siblings used Hobdy.
